1001 Dark Nights Surprise Announcement

1,001 Dark Nights is proud to present…

The Liliana Hart & Friends - MacKenzie Family Project!

A Message from Liliana Hart:

Dear Readers,
I’m thrilled to be able to introduce the MacKenzie Family World to you. I asked five of my favorite authors to create their own characters and put them into the world you all know and love. These amazing authors revisited Surrender, Montana, and through their imagination you’ll get to meet new characters, while reuniting with some of your favorites.
These stories are hot, hot, hot—exactly what you’d expect from a MacKenzie story—and it was pure pleasure for me to read each and every one of them and see my world through someone else’s eyes. They definitely did the series justice, and I hope you discover five new authors to put on your auto-buy list.
Make sure you check out Troublemaker, a brand new, full-length MacKenzie novel written by me. And yes, you’ll get to see more glimpses of Shane before his book comes out next year.
So grab a glass of wine, pour a bubble bath, and prepare to Surrender.
Love Always,
Liliana Hart

REVIEW: November 9 by Colleen Hoover

NOVEMBER NINE
BY COLLEEN HOOVER

ABOUT NOVEMBER NINE
Fallon meets Ben, an aspiring novelist, the day of her scheduled cross-country move. Their untimely attraction leads them to spend Fallon’s last day in L.A. together, and her eventful life becomes the creative inspiration Ben has always sought for his novel. Over time and amidst the various relationships and tribulations of their own separate lives, they continue to meet on the same date every year. Until one day Fallon becomes unsure if Ben has been telling her the truth or fabricating a perfect reality for the sake of the ultimate plot twist.

Can Ben’s relationship with Fallon—and simultaneously his novel—be considered a love story if it ends in heartbreak?

MY REVIEW

There are many things that Colleen Hoover is famous for: her love of Toms, her love of The Avett Brothers, her loyalty to Diet Pepsi, and her own genre of books (e.g. a friend asks you what you're reading. You say November 9. They ask romance? You say NO. IT'S SOOO MUCH MORE. They stare at you and ask suspense? You say for the love of GOD. It's a COHO. THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS).

So how do I write a review for a book that's been reviewed many times over?

You know what? I'll tell you about the worst part in the book.

I'll tell you how I sat in bed with my iPad turned off and just tried to breathe through it.

How I fucking cursed her (Colleen - for doing this to me YET AGAIN), and then berated myself for not knowing better. I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER.

How I opened my iPad cover, swiped to unlock and prayed that I'd forget my password in that moment so I wouldn't be confronted by the words that I knew were waiting for me on my Kindle app.

How I started reading really fast until it hit me at the same time as it registered with Fallon. The lead-up was oh so subtle. But the realization. Oh the realization. That was like living on a small island that just experienced an earthquake, tsunami, and a hurricane all in the span for a few minutes. The destruction was catastrophic.

How I took a solid minute to read each word because the aftermath was excruciating. Maybe the story would change if I took too long to read it. After all, it's magical just to be able to read, so anything is possible. Right? RIGHT? Right.

How the worst part in this book is why Colleen is one of the best authors there is.

COVER REVEAL: The Sin Trilogy by Georgia Cates

I’ve watched him from afar for years. And he has no idea. I take joy in that.

Through my observations, I’ve learned what makes this charming villain tick.
Whisky.
Power.
Beautiful women.
And Sex. Lots of it.

Sometimes you must get into bed with the enemy for the greater good. And that’s what I’ll do; it’s all part of making Sinclair Breckenridge fall in love with me so I can penetrate his inner circle.

There’s hell to pay.
I’m a dark horse. The perfect storm.
I am Bleu MacAllister. And I’m coming for him.

AMAZON      Barnes & Noble    iBooks

EXCERPT:

Bleu MacAllister’s POV:

“You better be worth all this work and waiting.” He nips my bottom lip and gives my ass another painful squeeze before turning to walk to his car.

Anticipation—it builds excitement and suspense. The brain really is a sexual organ, even for men. Sin is going to spend the next five days and nights fantasizing about what it’ll be like when he finally has me beneath him. Waiting is something he’s never had to do so this is another way of setting me apart from the others before me. It proves I’m worth the wait and far more than just fuckworthy.

I’ve watched her from afar for weeks. And she has no idea.

Bleu MacAllister ran from me three months ago. She thought she could disappear from my life. My beloved believed I’d let her go.
Wrong.

Bleu says I won’t find her; she changes like a chameleon. Wrong, again. Some things remain unaltered. She’s still beautiful. Sexy as hell. And I want her more than my next breath.

The circumstances bringing us together have changed. It’s a precarious situation because my bonny lass is a hunted traitor. But I’ll do whatever it takes to keep her safe.

She will be my wife.
I am Sinclair Breckenridge. And I’m coming for her.

Amazon     iBooks     Barnes & Noble

Excerpt
Sinclair’s POV

I’m in the background of Bleu’s life, as I have been for weeks. I have eyes on her at all times, even when they’re not my own. I safeguard her from harm. It’s all I’ve done since tracking my lass down in a small town in Mississippi, right outside of Memphis. I act as her protector from afar and she has no idea. She believes she’s hidden from The Fellowship—and me—but she couldn’t be more wrong. I’m always here, keeping a watchful eye on her and the MacAllister family.
I often need to be reminded that this is Bleu’s world. Every person she has contact with isn’t a threat but there’s an enormous problem with that. I have no idea who’s friend or foe.
I was concerned when Bleu disappeared at the bar with a man earlier tonight. I was on the verge of barging into the back until my lass came out on stage to perform with the band. I don’t think I’ve ever been so surprised in all my life. I knew she played but I never pegged her for a public performer. That doesn’t seem like my Bonny at all.
But I guess I don’t really know the real Bleu MacAllister. I only know the woman she pretended to be.

Sinclair Breckenridge is my husband. We’re up and coming leaders to The Fellowship and parents to be. But my new life doesn’t come easily. Not when long buried secrets––and far more than I bargained for––finally reveal my mother’s killer.

Sin vows to do anything to keep our little ones and me safe, even if his promise means denying me of the one thing I want most in this world. He doesn’t understand it’s the death of my dream. And that’s a problem.

Georgia resides in rural Mississippi with her wonderful husband, Jeff, and their two beautiful daughters. She spent fourteen years as a labor and delivery nurse before she decided to pursue her dream of becoming an author and hasn’t looked back yet.

When she’s not writing, she’s thinking about writing. When she’s being domestic, she’s listening to her iPod and visualizing scenes for her current work in progress. Every story coming from her always has a song to inspire it.

Refusing to answer to “Jane Doe” for another day, the woman renames herself “Water” for the tiny, hidden marking on her body—the only clue to her past. Taken in by old Ginny Fitzgerald, a crotchety but kind lady living on a nearby horse farm, Water slowly begins building a new life. But as she attempts to piece together the fleeting slivers of her memory, more questions emerge: Who is the next-door neighbor, quietly toiling under the hood of his Barracuda? Why won’t Ginny let him step foot on her property? And why does Water feel she recognizes him? Twenty-four-year-old Jesse Welles doesn’t know how long it will be before Water gets her memory back. For her sake, Jesse hopes the answer is never. He knows that she’ll stay so much safer—and happier—that way. And that’s why, as hard as it is, he needs to keep his distance. Because getting too close could flood her with realities better left buried. The trouble is, water always seems to find its way to the surface.

When Rust hands him the managerial keys to the garage, they come with a second set—one that opens up the door to tons of cash and opportunity. Though it's not exactly legal, Luke's never been one to worry about that sort of thing. Especially when it puts him behind the wheel of a Porsche 911 and onto the radar of gorgeous socialite named Rain. Clara Bertelli is at the top of her game—at only twenty-six years old, she's one of the most successful undercover officers in the Washington, DC, major crime unit, and she's just been handed a case that could catapult her career and expose one of the West coast's most notorious car theft rings. But, in order to do it, she'll need to go deep undercover as Rain Martines. Her target? The twenty-four-year-old nephew of a key player who appears ready to follow in his uncle's footsteps. As Clara drifts deeper into the luxurious lifestyle of Rain, and further into the arms of her very attractive and charming target, the lines between right and wrong start to blur, making her wonder if she'll be able to leave it all behind. About CHASING RIVER: Armed with two years' worth of savings and the need to experience life outside the bubble of her Oregon small town, twenty-five-year old Amber Welles is prepared for anything. Except dying in Dublin.  Had it not been for the bravery of a stranger, she might have. But he takes off before she has the chance to offer her gratitude. Twenty-four-year-old River Delaney is rattled. No one was supposed to get hurt. But then that American tourist showed up. He couldn't let her die, but he also couldn’t risk being identified at the scene—so, he ran. Back to his everyday life of running his family’s pub.  Only, everyday life is getting more and more complicated, thanks to his brother, Aengus, and his criminal associations. When the American girl tracks River down, he quickly realizes how much he likes her, how wrong she is for him.  And how dangerous it is to have her around. Chasing her off would be the smart move. Maybe it's because he saved her life, or maybe it's because he's completely different from everything she's left behind, but Amber finds herself chasing after River Delaney. Amber isn’t the kind of girl to chase after anyone. And River isn't the kind of guy she'd want to catch.

Black Iris by Leah Raeder

Holy hell, this book.
THIS BOOK.
THIS F***ING BOOK.

If you haven't read Unteachable, then you have no idea what Leah Raeder is capable of. If you have, then you know that this woman can write. Black Iris obliterates whatever genre this book will be pigeonholed into. It destroyed my Top Favourites list and moved its psychotic pages into my Top 3. It knocked Unteachable off the freaking pedestal, shoving it to the ground, knocking the bejesus out of it with a baseball bat.

It only took one moment of weakness for Laney Keating’s world to fall apart. One stupid gesture for a hopeless crush. Then the rumors began. Slut, they called her. Queer. Psycho. Mentally ill, messed up, so messed up even her own mother decided she wasn’t worth sticking around for.
If Laney could erase that whole year, she would. College is her chance to start with a clean slate.
She’s not looking for new friends, but they find her: charming, handsome Armin, the only guy patient enough to work through her thorny defenses—and fiery, filterless Blythe, the bad girl and partner in crime who has thorns of her own.
But Laney knows nothing good ever lasts. When a ghost from her past resurfaces—the bully who broke her down completely—she decides it’s time to live up to her own legend. And Armin and Blythe are going to help.
Which was the plan all along.
Because the rumors are true. Every single one. And Laney is going to show them just how true.
She’s going to show them all.

As I pasted the above description, I actually read the synopsis for the first time. It makes the book sound lighter than it actually is. And it's not. For me, this was a story about the most flawed, unstable, and scary characters that I've come across in pretty much all my years of reading (and I read It when I was 11). There are twists and turns in this story that actually had me waking up in a cold sweat. There are scenes that will having you wanting to tap out; give up reading at 32% because you know that Ms. Raeder is a genius with her carefully selected words that make your skin crawl to the point on unbearable torture.

The caption has it pegged as "The next dark and sexy romantic suspense novel...", and for the love of all that is holy, that statement couldn't be more accurate. In a book with characters that give Keyser Söze a run for his money, the ridiculous chemistry between the three main characters (and ALL that they do with it) is OFF.THE.CHARTS.

Now while you may be captivated by the cover and the synopsis, please know that this book will not be for everyone. The characters are flawed beyond redemption. There's violence, drug use, and hell of a lot of what I'm pretty sure are triggers for some readers. But if you give it a chance (and I'm begging you that you do), I'll take this opportunity to hope that you enjoy this bat-shit-crazy ride.

NOTE: I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. And that's exactly what you just got.

Confess by Colleen Hoover

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover, a new novel about risking everything for love—and finding your heart somewhere between the truth and lies.

Auburn Reed has her entire life mapped out. Her goals are in sight and there’s no room for mistakes. But when she walks into a Dallas art studio in search of a job, she doesn’t expect to find a deep attraction to the enigmatic artist who works there, Owen Gentry.

For once, Auburn takes a risk and puts her heart in control, only to discover that Owen is keeping some major secrets from coming out. The magnitude of his past threatens to destroy everything important to Auburn, and the only way to get her life back on track is to cut Owen out of it.

The last thing Owen wants is to lose Auburn, but he can’t seem to convince her that truth is sometimes as subjective as art. All he would have to do to save their relationship is confess. But in this case, the confession could be much more destructive than the actual sin…

MY REVIEW

I must confess that I occasionally wish that the magic that Colleen Hoover waves over simple words, that turn into beautiful stories, would lessen. Why? Because she makes liars out of her die-hard fans who have no choice but to declare Confess the best they've read; their new favourite Colleen Hoover book. Which is exactly what most of us have said about all her previous stories, myself included. So we are liars. We said that the book before was the best (and the one before that, and the one before that...you get the point), and then she gives us  Owen and Auburn. We didn't think she could give us uglier ugly tears, and then she writes the opening to Confess. We said the writing in her last book was at the pinnacle, and then she gives us Auburn to love, Owen to root for, another character to hate, and the desperate need to eliminate one by whatever means necessary.

I think the thing that always seems to catch me off guard is what I'm going to refer to as The Hoover. It's the knowledge that there will come a turning point (the ones that the author is famous for) that will have me sobbing like a baby, but my curiosity for HOW she'll shatter me yet again never lives up to the actual execution. And so was the case with Confess - I thought I had an idea but I was as wrong as putting vanilla yogurt in your coffee when you've run out of milk (sad to say I did do that, and it was very WRONG). The story of Owen and Auburn is laced with love, heartbreak, and fantastical twists that have again reminded me why I absolutely love everything that this author writes.

Enter for a chance to win! Visit Atria’s Tumblr page from 3/9 – 3/22 to enter to win one of five signed copies of CONFESS.

Landslide by Jenn Cooksey

This book. THIS book. THIS BOOK. I'm still at a loss for words, except to say that if you haven't read anything by Jenn Cooksey, your life is incomplete. I know that many will say that those are some fighting' words, but until you read her previous works (the Grab Your Pole series) and Landslide, you can't argue with me.

Ok - I found some words.

Landslide is nothing like the GYP series, except maybe in that the writing manages to pull you in from the very first word, and doesn't let go of its strangle-hold on you until the very end. At which point you beg the book-gods that your eReader is malfunctioning, and that 100% isn't really 100%.

The only thing I knew about this book was the first line of the blurb - For Erica and Cole, the bond of friendship was forged in childhood.

The story of these two managed to make me feel the whole gamut of emotions, which I was not prepared for. I liked Cole. Then I hated Cole. Then I REALLY hated Cole. I felt sorry for Erica. Then I hated Erica. Then I felt sorry again for Erica. And then I just wanted Erica and Cole to be the Erica and Cole that the author gave us glimpses of. I won't even go into how Jenn yet again managed to write the most perfect dialogue, laced with just the right amount of humour. I won't go into how she pulled the rug out from underneath me YET AGAIN, with absolutely no warning. The things that I was thinking and what was really going on were worlds apart, and yet I couldn't even imagine the direction it would all go (and trust me, I had some pretty wild ideas!).

People always ask what authors I wish more people read, and Landslide does nothing but forever cement why I always include Jenn Cooksey in my answer.

Happenstance 3 by Jamie McGuire

The Happenstance series is one of the most heartfelt, endearing, I-feel-it -in-my-bones, stories I've read. I keep having to remind myself that the same author that gave me a place to belong with Beautiful Disaster is the same amazing creature that has me loving Weston, Erin, and everything about Happenstance 3. I'm so impressed with her versatility because I've only read a few authors that could pull of writing seamlessly in two genres. The journey that Erin went through is validation that good will prevail. You might have to wait a while, but it will get better. There will always be a--holes out there who'll fight tooth and nail to bring you down, and will only succeed if you let them. I'm just thankful that stories like Happenstance and characters like Erin exist for those of us who will occasionally need reminders that we are worthy of happiness, success, and all the good that has come our way. There will be readers who will gush about the love between Weston and Erin. There will admirers of Jamie McGuire who will say that this is the reason that she is a favourite of so many of us all around the world. There will be fans who will go down fighting till the bitter end, defending their point of view that stories like this are the reason they read.

And I don't disagree with any of them.
